1817, Den 7 December Philippus de Vos, van Cabo de Goede Hoop, Burger alhier jongman met Margareta Maria de Bruin van Cabo voorm', Jonge Dogter
Slave Owner
In 1816, the Cape Colony Slave Registers were set up, by District[3]. This was to prevent free Khoi/San and 'apprenticed' people freed from slave trading ships, to be enslaved at the cape. Also to protect slaves from bad treatment, and to prepare for abolition that would finally come in 1834/38.
Philippus de Vos, registered 25 slaves, in Folio V15[4], and Folio V94[5].
One single slave, a tayler, was shared among the following siblings: Pieter Jacobus de Vos, Philippus, Dirk, Jacob, Wouter, Margaretha Jacoba, married to Daniel Retief. This taylor was registered in Folio V92[6]. One may probably conclude that these people lived near enough to share this one tailer, which means they were probably all in the Hex River Valley, where Pieter Jacobus seems to have farmed.
DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philippus by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line.
